Sat 12 & Sun 13 Nov, 9am-4pm, $60. Grant says ‘I don’t make pizza ovens any more – pizzas are bad for the waist line’ – he builds ‘serious’ ovens which can bake bread, make hangi or even roast a pig! This will be a smaller, versatile oven to be used by community gardeners and in community events. In this workshop you will have a hands-on experience with earth building, contribute to a community project and get an introduction to earth building theory. DAY 1 – Learn the principles of earth building theory, first-hand account of experimental light earth construction. Practical: day 1 of earth oven construction. DAY 2 – Applying earthen mix to oven exterior, tiling interior with NZ made Middle Earth tiles. Tutor: GRANT STEVEN teaches sustainable rural development at Northtec, and has worked for years with iwi in the north, building organoponico Cuban-style gardens, earth ovens and has recently developed experimental light earth walls with shredded pampas grass (what a great use of this weed!). Building affordable, natural, light earth housing in rural Maori communities is Grant’s main focus. Rain date: 19-20 Nov. BRING: Covered shoes, old clothes or coveralls. Raincoat, lunch.
